Taking Your Signature - Guitars Of The Greats

By Hugh McKenna

If you've ever hankered after the tone of the greats then we've got a range of guitars which can get you that bit closer. While a record contract and festival appearances might not be included there are a number of other advantages to signature gear.
  • You get the feel of a special instrument. Guitarists normally come across their ideal guitar more or less by chance, there are small differences even between guitars of the same model made in the same year. When a manufacturer teams up with an artist they try and find what makes that guitar tick and make that available you lucky people.
  • Custom modifications. Similarly if there were any modifications made to the guitar which don't appear in any other model, particularly electronics and bridge modifications.
  • Looks that kill. Sometimes even going as far as to include the wear, tear and cigarette burns of the artists original guitar, signature guitars just look great.

Johnny Marr Signature GuitarJohnny Marr

Johnny's a Jag man since "discovering" one in 2005 while playing with Modest Mouse:

Johnny Marr Interview on his Fender signature Jaguar

"Primarily, I was attracted to the Jag by the way it sounded – this big, clear, ringing sound. My first proper experience playing one was with Modest Mouse in 2005. I had this riff kicking around that ended up becoming the song ‘Dashboard’, and it went from there really. The Jag suited the way I’d evolved as a guitar player, but at the same time my old stuff sounded absolutely right on it. It sounds like I’m supposed to sound.”

Kurt Cobain

Another fan of Fender was the late, great Kurt Cobain. He used a Mustang in the video for Smells Like Teen Spirit and on tour for In Utero. Seymour Duncans, phase switches and vibrato give you serious options in terms of tone.

Avril Lavigne

Sometimes a signature model really brings something new to the table and goes beyond a mere replica. The Avril Lavigne Signature Telecaster offers a basswood body, single bridge humbucker and a neat skull and crossbones motif at the bridge.

Jim Root BundleJim Root

Another Squier artist, Jim Root has given guitarists a chance to get some of his bone crushing tone. With a signature Telecaster incorporating EMG pickups and a phenomenal Orange amp head and cabinet. It wasn't Jim's intention to offer up one static sound as he'd rather players have something versatile but made to his particular standards. Get the whole Jim Root package with Dolphin.
