Classic Rock Tone With TC Electronic

Classic Rock Tone With TC Electronic

Joe Perry Of Aerosmith

One of the most famous rockers of them all, Joe Perry has penned some of the iconic rock riffs with Aerosmith. As befits classic rock royalty Joe wields a Les Paul for his main axe but has used all the usual suspects from Strat to SG. For back line it's another stone cold classic, the mighty Marshall stack with 4x12 cab and SM57 microphones pointed at the grille.

As for Joe Perry's pedal board we can see a range of TC Electronic pedals including the Hall Of Fame Reverb, Flashback Delay and Vortex Flanger. Joe's used most of the TC range of pedals to get the sounds of Aerosmith's classic albums while playing live, whether it's a slapback delay on the Flashback or full whooshing flanger for that 70's sound. Working with his guitar tech Trace Foster they really dug into TC's toneprint technology and condensed sounds made over decades on all kinds of esoteric, vintage gear into Joe's TC pedals.

Joe Perrys Amps

We can also see an MXR Carbon Copy delay and a Klon Centaur overdrive. The Klon is a near mythical beast, made by artisans in an underground lab in Prague if you buy into the wild internet adulation.

Steve Morse Pedals

Steve Morse Of Deep Purple & Flying Colours

Described as one of the hardest working guitarists in the business Steve knows tone back to front. With his signature Musicman guitar and Engl amps Steve has his sound down, so it's even more impressive that a Flashback managed to nudge his trusty analogue delay pedal off the board. Steve has also used the Hall Of Fame reverb, Polytune and a Spark Booster to kick the Engls into high gear.

Steve Stevens, Guitarist With Billy Idol

Joining Billy Idol at the start of his meteoric rise Steve's sound tapped right into classic 80's tone. He's still rocking a range of modulation and delay effects, we can see the Corona in his rig and Steve had a whale of a time tinkering with Toneprints for the Flashback X4 and Vortex.

Audley Freed Of Black Crowes

He's toured with the Black Crowes, played live with Page and worked in the studio with Joe Perry. Audley is a phenomenal talent with a serious tone and to gig with such a range of artists needs great flexibility too. Rocking an SG, Flashback delay and Shaker pedals Audley's rig can cover a huge tonal range but never forget the real magic is in the fingers.

Ryan Roxie And Orianthi Of Alice Cooper

Two great guitarists playing in one legendary band, both with different approaches to effects. Ryan Roxie's rig is largely at his feet with dedicated stomp boxes including two Flashbacks, a Spark Booster, Shaker and Jon Petrucci's signature Dreamscape pedal. Ryan jokes that the most important pedal is the Polytune as he "...likes to play a lot of wrong notes but they're always in tune." On guitar Ryan uses his trusty sunburst Les Paul and at the back it could only be a Marshall stack. Occasionally Ryan uses a Line 6 wireless system to free him up on stage.

By contrast Orianthi prefers rack based effects using a G Major 2 effects processor for a lot of her sounds. Everyone's favourite, the Polytune, also makes an appearance and of course if you want a guitar like Orianthi then her signature PRS is the way to go. Delivering that heavyweight tone, Orianthi's amp is the modern rock/metal staple EVH 5150. Orianthi has also used the Corona and Vortex to create a few distinctive modulation tones.

Alan Moulder told Sound On Sound that when working with Josh Homme and Dave Grohl in 'Them Crooked Vultures' John favoured his modern bass rig over the stacks of vintage valve gear Josh brought along for recording. Try the Rebel Head and Stack for that fat, round tone.
