Mattessons' Hank Marvin advert: which guitar is it?
What guitar and song is it in the Mattessons Fridge Raiders "Hank Marvin" advert?
The Shadows (who started out as Cliff Richard's backing band), Hank Marvin was famed for playing the UK's first Fender Stratocaster. It was imported from America by Sir Cliff himself, and finished in Fiesta Red, with gold hardware and a tremolo arm.
The Mattessons advert's creators, agency Saatchi & Saatchi, have obviously taken pains to get a look that's as accurate as possible - to the untrained eye, this might look like an original imported 50s model. But Dolphin's guitar geeks noticed that 18 seconds into the advert, "Hank Marvin" heads a football and clearly shows the guitar's headstock with the Squier by Fender branding, so this'll be their Bullet Strat (Fiesta Red) model with a dark rosewood fretboard. You can see why they've gone for the beginner's Squier model - it's got all the look of a more expensive Fender, but it's just £84 - and they've obviously used a lot of them!
If you want to recreate the Hank Marvin Fridge Raiders advertisement look at home (or even learn to play!), but aren't fussed about the 100% faithful recreation that's possible with a Fender branded guitar, we can recommend the Eastcoast Beginners Guitar Pack (Red). At £99, it includes at amp that on its own sells for £39, plus a tuition CD-ROM, a strap, tuning pitch pipes, guitar bag and spare set of guitar strings.
We've listed a number of other Mattessons Hank Marvin guitars below, so if you're a more serious player but are still inspired by this ad's classic fifties look, there's still something for you.
