Peavey Classic Amps Fit for a Queen
Peavey at the Jubilee
As we know, the Queen celebrated 60 years on the throne just over a week ago. The Diamond Jubilee featured performances from some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Elton John, Stevie Wonder and Sir Paul McCartney, who all gathered outside Buckingham Palace to play for the huge crowds that lined the area.
Peavey player Milton McDonald, who was the main guitarist for the Jubilee house band speaks about the equipment used and shares his thoughts on the Peavey Classic Series amplifiers.
McDonald claims that his amp of choice has always been a Peavey Classic 50 410 combo, and due to its flexibility and versatility, guitar technician Steve Prior (who is also a Peavey fan) requested four of them for the Jubilee performances, along with some Classic 50 212s, for the six guest guitarists.
“A couple of the guests weren’t keen on an amp with a 10-inch speaker, which is why we got the 212s in as well; I also brought my own Peavey Delta Blues, which is a great amp. Mike Stevens, the MD, used that in the end, and everyone wanted to use it when they heard him play through it, it really did sound amazing.” - Prior
On the day, the amps were set up underneath the stage, out of sight, but as you can imagine, something had to be done about the Queen Victoria Memorial’s marble floor. The crew used blankets to provide a softened base for the amps to sit on, and a carpeted box was even built to keep the amps isolated and to prevent any undesirable audio effects being generated.
“Any valve amp needs to be driven hard, and the Classic 50 comes in a fantastic format as it’s a dual-channel amp, which means you can really control it sonically; you can balance things up, even with six different guitarists. Aside from Milton, I had the guitarists for Cliff Richard, Tom Jones and Annie Lennox all plugged into the 410s or 212s. They provide a nice big clean sound as well as a fantastic crunchier ‘core’ sound if you plug into the lead channel rather than the normal one, very versatile indeed.”
Prior shares that another advantage in using the Classic 50s is its EQ, which he says works “absolutely beautifully”... something he rarely says about a combo amplifier.
“Some EQ sections on amps don’t do much at all and you need to boost the mids, but with these Peavey amps, you have all the top end you could wish for. Once it’s stable, it’s an extremely serviceable and durable amp.”
“I have absolutely no criticisms whatsoever,” he concludes. “I have my own hire business and work with loads of amps, so I know what’s good and what’s not; going back 30 years, my first amp was a Peavey Bandit 212, and that held its own against anything. After this show, I am now on the lookout for a 410 and 212 myself, and I am certainly an ambassador for the Peavey cause; I’ll encourage anyone to use one.”
