The Gretsch CVT III | It's Controversial

Published: Mon April 23, 2012  News Feed

Get Gretsch with the CVT III

The Gretsch Electromatic Series is one of Gretsch’s more affordable ranges of guitars. The CVT (Corvette) was originally launched back in 1961 and has been through a few modifications over the years, one of which being the transition from having slab bodies to the curved beauty that you see now.

The Gretsch CVT III features a mahogany body and maple neck, which is held in place with four screws through a plate... similar to a Fender guitar. This bolt-on neck design is pretty unusual for a Gretsch and could possibly be off-putting for some of you dedicated “set-in” Gretschers out there. The CVT III includes an anchored adjust-o-matic bridge and bar tailpiece, also a surprising feature to see from Gretsch.

Other features include the chubby profile neck, rosewood fingerboard, distinctive double cutaway design and the Pièce de la rèsistance... the trio of mini-humbuckers, encased in chrome plated covers.

“With the bridge pickup engaged it comes across like a miffed Rickenbacker; that explosive power-chord thing that you hear on Jam records.”
- Music Radar Review

Selecting the other humbuckers one by one reveals some usable warmer tones, but it's the punk rock bliss in the bridge pickup that stands up and demands attention. CVT III players claim that the bolt-on neck makes the guitar feel very robust and tough, although some of you may disagree.

Bolt-on or set-in, a Gretsch with such great specs, impressive reviews and a tiny price tag, it’s one of Gretsch’s best offerings yet.
