Boss ME-70 Review - Its all about ME...!!!
What Boss has done here is something very clever; they have managed to combine great sounds and usability all in one great Multi FX unit. Now some may say that these should be minimum prerequisites of any Multi FX unit but in a world of alpha dials, knobs and digital displays, the guys at Boss have made this unit incredibly user friendly and have dispensed with the menu shifting of old. It basically comes down to having 4 Boss stomp boxes in one, plus tons of extras such as a Phrase Looper which offers up a huge 38 seconds of loop sampling time.
It has 4 footswitches, an expression pedal and an entire range of Boss ‘COSM’ Amp Modelling Technology one would wish to get their hands on. The footswitches comprise of Compression/FX, Distortions/Overdrives, Modulation Effects and finally Delays. The built in expression pedal allows you to control Wah, Pitch Shifting, Volume, Modulation Rates and Delay Rates. It has 36 Factory Pre Set Patches and 36 User Patches too so you can dial in your own sounds and save them. It can also just be used in Manual Mode where upon the user can change the FX in real time like they would with 4 separate stomp boxes. The EZ Tone function also gets you up and running straight out of the box. With its 24 bit, 44.1 kHz processing the ME-70 gives nothing away to its big brother the GT-10 in tonal qualities or build.
The build quality on this unit like most Boss FX is fantastic; it looks like it would withstand the most hardened of gigging. It is compact, sturdy and the clear bold LED screen is perfect for dark stages allowing you to see your pre sets in all light levels.
I would perhaps have to question the reliability of the plastic pedals, which would be getting a rigorous stomping over time, but they appear to be holding up for the main. It also eats batteries for breakfast, lunch and dinner but combined with a Boss PSU (sold separately) you would never have any problems in this department.
Let’s talk sound. Now coming from a total analogue effects purist, the only digital effects I have on my board are on a separate line select so as not to interfere with my “tone”. That said this unit just blew me away with everything on board. I could match any of my analogue tones with this amazing Multi FX and much more. All the digital sounds were warm and had analogue character in spades. At lower gain levels they responded well to dynamics, as well as cleaning up naturally with the guitar volume rolled down just like they would on separate FX.
This unit would sit fantastically well in any analogue or digital live set up and also performs under studio recording conditions as Boss have really nailed down those Pre Amps and COSM Modeling.
For under £250 you get thousands of pounds worth of Boss FX all in one well thought out, neat device. Let’s just say that Boss has got this bang on the money, and with their added 3 year warranty you would be a fool not to have one of these in your guitar rig.
