Uke's are IN! Eastcoast Rainbow Ukulele Collection

Published: Wed November 30, 2011  News Feed

The Ukulele!

... You can’t say the name without hearing the strum. This treasured instrument has a lot of history behind it, from its origins in Portugal in the late 19th Century to its connection with Hawaii today. The instrument has dipped and risen in popularity over the years, but there were two huge trends that helped make the ukulele so popular today, the explosion of the internet and the huge increase in imports from China and the East.

The web has brought ukulele music in front of people, inspiring many to try out the instrument for themselves and play for simple enjoyment, as opposed to playing with the hopes of becoming a superstar.

Who Plays the Uke?

Possibly the most well known “Ukers” of the UK are the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, who formed in 1985 and have been bringing us fun, originality and quirkiness ever since. The orchestra has had numerous members over the years and now consists of 7 ukuleles and the “bonsai guitar”.

Covering a vast spectrum of music, from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana, the UOGB takes audiences on a world tour with a consistent thread of humour, virtuosity and entertainment.

“You may never think about music in the same way once you’ve been exposed to the Uke’s depraved musicology”.

The UOGB are also said to have had an influence on the recent ukulele revival that is now sweeping the globe. With superstars like Beirut, Noah and the Whale and Taylor Swift including the Uke in their songs, the instrument is simply becoming more and more popular. It seems like it’s only a matter of time before the piano and the guitar are banished from the beginner pedestal and the Uke takes over.

As the ukulele’s popularity is increasing, the number of people interested in picking one up is increasing right along with it and with Dolphin’s amazing ukuleles; maybe it’s your turn to give the Uke a whirl.

Are you a Beginner?

The most widely used type of ukulele is the traditional sized soprano, the smallest, cheapest and by far the best choice for beginners. The soprano Uke is also the easiest to play as it requires less stretching for notes, whereas other sizes such as tenor and baritone call for a little more playing experience to sound as they should.

We are aware that beginners are after cheap, entry-level instruments, but of a decent quality that won’t put you off playing altogether. Dolphin have a wide range of soprano ukulele’s available to all, both beginners and advanced ukulelists. Our collection of Eastcoast soprano’s would make excellent starter instruments for anyone interested in learning how to play.

The Eastcoast Rainbow

Eastcoast manufacture a number of different instruments, including guitars and drums, and produce a lot of ukuleles ranging from entry-level to advanced, most of which we stock at Dolphin.

The Eastcoast coloured ukes are available in an array of colours, from bold and bright to traditional walnut and spruce, the Eastcoast soprano ukuleles produce a wonderfully bright and lively sound that is bound to put a smile on yours and your listener’s faces.

“Everyone should play a Uke. It’s so simple to carry with you and it’s one instrument you can’t play and not laugh” - George Harrison.

The rainbow Ukes come together with a free case and if the colours alone don’t hook you, maybe the features will.

They are available from a shocking £15.00 and feature a nato wood top with basswood back, sides, neck and headstock. It also features coloured plastic knobs on the geared tuners.

Good quality and low price tag, we think the Eastcoast Ukuleles are our best option for beginners and they would make excellent gifts for friends and family this Christmas.

View our full collection of ukuleles, or our rainbow ukes that make playing even more enjoyable. We also have a bunch of Uke accessories too, including, cases, tuners, strings and song books.
