Routes Jukebox

The city of Liverpool is well known across the world for producing bands like The Zutons, The Wombats and of course The Beatles, however; the city is not yet finished delivering great musicians. Witnessing these Liverpool born bands succeed in the international music market inspires the people of the city to chase after their own dreams, both musically and otherwise.

Still image photographer Mark McNulty had been capturing images in many fields including the music and fashion industries. It was not until five years ago that McNulty began filming and editing footage of events, realizing that although still images can be extremely powerful, they simply do not portray the same depth, or have the same effect as moving images.

It was in 2009 that McNulty has been producing music videos for his favourite bands in Liverpool and posting them to his website RoutesJukebox.com. Having a passion for Folk and Country “roots” type music; he began expanding his portfolio and continued filming musicians like The Lost Brothers, Mike Badger, Sixteen Tonnes and The Random Family.

Routes Jukebox is continuing to introduce us to many great artists who have either originated from or visited the city of Liverpool. So we’re going to take a look at a couple performers and an even closer look at their beloved instruments that have assisted in their success.

Delta Maid is a Liverpool born singer/songwriter, pianist and guitarist. Growing up listening to her parent’s old-fashioned music collection, Delta’s passion for music sparked when she listened to country/blues queen Rory Block’s Best Blues and Originals, after which she became interested in many more blues artists including the legendary Robert Johnson. Delta Maid’s debut album Outside Looking In was released in May 2011 and features an array of soulful and inspiring country/blues tunes. Her authentic Deep-Southern, country/blues sound has been said to be rather deceiving, in that it is pretty much impossible to detect any hint of her Liverpool accent during her performances.

Having supported acts like Seth Lakeman and The Coral, Delta Maid has gained a significant amount of positive public attention and is becoming increasingly recognized by both fans and critics for her unquestionable talent. Relying largely on the accompaniment of her own acoustic guitar, which appears to be a Martin & Co. J-14 custom, Delta maid delivers captivating and emotional performances. She is a sincere and charming artist and as much as we’d like to keep her all to ourselves here in Liverpool, we think she’s destined for worldwide success.

Delta maid’s traditional style steel-string J-14 acoustic delivers both the high quality sound that an artist needs and as this particular model is customizable, it provides that much needed individuality and memorable quality that solo performers look for in an instrument. Delta’s guitar features a curvaceous body with a vintage adirondack spruce top. Customized shimmering hex-outline fret inlays, similarly shimmering stripe along the guitars scratch plate and gold tuning pegs. If you’re interested in becoming a singer/songwriter like Delta Maid, then take a look at the instruments that Dolphin recommends to get you started. The Tanglewood TSJ XFM Exotic Super Jumbo Acoustic Guitar features traditional natural spruce top, shimmering hexagonal inlays, rosewood fingerboard and beautifully contrasted maple neck. However, if you’re looking for a guitar that’s a little further out on the individuality scale then perhaps the Yamaha FS720S in cobalt aqua is the one for you. Dolphin also stocks the more “pocket-friendly” option of the Yamaha F310, probably one of the most popular guitars due to the promised Yamaha quality and affordability.

Available on Routes Jukebox is the short film Broken Branches, an introduction to Delta maid, her music, inspiration and where she came from. The film features exclusive interviews with the singer and includes multiple tracks the album Outside Looking In. RoutesJukebox.com

Said The Whale are a Canadian Indie Pop band, formed in 2007, originally consisting of singer/songwriters Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester. Bancroft, who is a truly gifted vocalist, also showcases his Ukulele skills in tracks like Goodnight Moon. The duo’s debut EP, Talking Abalonia was released in 2008, which was a fusion of the upbeat styling of Californian indie pop and the more interesting, atypical sounds from the music of their home city, Vancouver. Featuring many other different musical styles such as hard rock, bubblegum pop and some gentle ukulele sounds, the bands stylistic pallet meant that their music was available to everyone. Later welcoming 3 additional band members, Said The Whale then re-released their first album Howie Sounds/Talking Abalonia, which included a bassist (Nathan Shaw), a drummer (Spencer Schoening) and a keyboardist (Jaycelyn Brown). After a rigorous touring adventure hitting places like V-Fest in Calgary and criss-crossing Canada the quintet released their second album in 2009, Islands Disappear.

Said The Whale performed in Liverpool Sound City in May 2011. You can watch a live performance by the band, shot by Mark McNulty during their time in Liverpool, by visiting Routes Jukebox.

Interested in Said the Whale’s instrumental collection? Check out Dolphin’s recommended instruments for a ”Said The Whale sound” like the Fender Hau'oli ukulele with its laminated mahogany body, favoured by Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy, and the Ibanez AW3000 acoustic guitar. Other Dolphin instruments similar to the band’s own are the beautiful arch-top semi-acoustic Ibanez AS73T which is genuinely a “stand-out” guitar and comes in transparent cherry red almost identical to Bancroft’s own. The band is also associated with the well-known Gibson SG electric guitar. Gibson, being one of the biggest names in the industry, guarantees quality, style and playability, so if these features are sounding pretty good to you right now then take a closer look Dolphins wide selection of Gibson SGs.
