HALO: The Guitarist's Microphone
So, if you’re a guitarist or an engineer then you’ve probably come up against this before. You have a seemingly endless combination of guitars, amps, cabs, combos and effects pedals at your disposal, allowing you to get just the right tone, but then when it comes to recording or providing sound reinforcement while incorporating all that great hardware, the choice is much less exciting. More often than not, this scenario will end with a generic vocal or instrument dynamic mic awkwardly aimed at the amplifiers sweet spot and a lot of fiddling with EQs at the mixing desk in attempt to preserve that punch. Now, thanks to Sontronics, the need for compromise is over.
Meet the HALO, a painstakingly developed, purpose designed dynamic microphone specifically for miking up guitar amps and cabs. Envisaged by Sontronics’ founder and mic designer Trevor Coley, Halo doesn’t try to please everyone, and frankly, why should it?
As a side note, it’s worth mentioning that HALO does actually sound rather fantastic when used as a vocal or snare mic too, but I digress…
This is a mic for all of the live and recording guitarists and engineers amongst us, and let’s be fair there are a fair few of us out there. Halo offers practicality and ease of use and really delivers on sound quality. Bearing more than a passing resemblance to Sontronics’ high-end condenser, the SATURN, this new offering combines these striking aesthetics with a more robust dynamic capsule, using the technology from the bestselling STC-80. A cardioid polar pattern and tailored 50Hz-15kHz frequency response plus a few new tweaks come togther to minimise unwanted noise and stage vibrations and to really bring out that authentic guitar sound.
HALO from Sontronics is due to start shipping next week. Pre order yours now!
