New Sontronics Drum Microphones Launched

Published: Mon March 28, 2011  News Feed

Renowned microphone manufacturer Sontronics have launched three brand new, quality microphones specifically designed for use with acoustic drum kits.

The first of these new releases is the Sontronics Sontronics DM-1B. Created for the kick drum the Sontronics DM-1B is a large diaphragm, end-fire condenser microphone that has been designed to pick up and project all aspects of sounds created by the bass drum. Everything from the beater click to the bass drum decay is detected and projected through the beautifully designed Sontronics DM-1B. It has a switchable -15db pad that allows the microphone to deal with sound levels up to 155db. The Sontronics DM-1B is not only fantastic to use in the studio but with its aluminium flight case to protect it, it performs just as well on the road too. Bands such as the Arctic Monkeys, Killers and U2 have tested this mic and have also found it to work well on any bass instrument.

Sontronics founder and designer, Trevor Coley meticulously designed the DM-1T and DM-1S to capture the exact characteristics of the Tom and Snare drums. The DM-1T is made specifically for the Tom drum and the DM-1S for the Snare drum. With a cardiod polar pattern and switchable -15db pad each mic has been designed to pick up the different characteristics of sound from the different drums. Each of these mics comes with a metal drum mount and mic clip.

Mark Rankin, Producer/Engineer for Florence & The Machine, Friendly Fires, Adele and Plan B, was among the many producers who field tested the mics said;
“On a session for Friendly Fires' new album, we were recording drums and had two mics on the snare - the new Sontronics DM-1S and another famous brand side-address condenser that costs about ten times as much. We had to keep checking that the patching was correct because we thought the Sontronics mic sounded like the thousand-pound-plus microphone. Incredible.”
