Tune-in or tune-out: Why use Auto Tune?
This week the British tabloid is awash with talk of Auto Tune after the shocking revelation that contestants' auditions had been subjected to audio processing during the opening episode of popular show 'The X-Factor’. During a performance of ‘Walking on Sunshine’ by young talent show hopeful Gamu Nhengu, viewers speculated feverishly about the presence of an outside influence on her voice, airing their views through the popular social networking applications Facebook and Twitter. Since then, the producers behind Simon Cowell’s international hit show have admitted to the use of vocal enhancement. We decided to take a look at what all the fuss is about…
Unless you've been living beneath a rock you will doubtless be familiar with Auto-Tune. If you've not actually come across this strange melodic phenomenon in action then you're likely to have heard the term banded around. Auto-Tune is an audio processor originally created by Antares Audio Technologies which utilises phase vocoder technology to disguise mistakes in vocal and instrumental performances. The term now enjoys much wider use referring to the overall effect and its various applications. In its truest sense auto tune allows for pitch perfect delivery in a studio or live situation but by altering the parameters slightly it is possible to create an artificial, almost robotic effect where the notes are pitch bent noticeably leading to the sound now popularised in Commercial Pop, Dance, Country and R&B by Cher, Jennifer Lopez, T-Pain & Lil Wayne not to mention the global smash series Glee. Due to its marmite like quality, auto tune has won as many haters as it has fans with particularly high profile detractors like Hip Hop Mogul Jay-Z and US Indie veterans Deathcab for Cutie slamming the use of auto tune as gimmicky and lacking integrity.
Love it or hate it, auto tuning is now a very real part of the recording process and has become standard in professional studios the world over, so whether you’re a dance producer, musician, up-and-coming vocalist or even a time served studio buff, if you want to give yourself the edge in tracking and mixing professional sounding vocals or adding the now famous vocoder-esque effects to you tracks then look no further!
