Meet Franz Ferdinand's Evil Twins - the 1990s!

Published: Fri April 24, 2009  News Feed

Once upon a time, there was a cult indie band from Glasgow called The Yummy Fur. One of it's members, Alex Kapranos, went on to form Franz Ferdinand. Another, Jackie McKeown, created The 1990's - a spiky punk pop band signed to legendary label Rough Trade records...

The 1990's

Signed after only six gigs, The 1990's have released two albums on Rough Trade Records, the same label who launched bands such as The Strokes and The Libertines. Both albums, 'Cookies' and the newly-released 'Kicks', have been produced by Bernard Butler, the genius guitarist of seminal britpop band Suede, who went on to become one of the most acclaimed British producers of recent times (his CV includes Duffy's 'Rockferry' album)

The 1990's have toured with bands such as Franz Ferdinand, Babyshambles and CSS,  but remain very much a cult act.

Jackie McKeown with his Fender Jaguar

Jackie McKeown and his ever faithful Fender Jaguar

Their sound, wonderfully captured by Bernard Butler on their two albums, couldn't be simpler - straightforward Fender tones all the way, a blistering mix of Fender Jaguar (and Squier Telecaster) on a clean Fender Hot Rod DeLuxe 112, with a Boss GE-7 thrown in for solos. Simple, but very effective...

The band is currently touring the UK so if you have the chance to see them live - don't miss it!
