NAMM 2009: Yamaha Guitars New Products
Pulling out all the stops for this years winter NAMM show, Yamaha Guitars are releasing 6 new electro-acoustics bringing variety and un-paralleled performance across the whole range. Roundup finds out more…
Yamaha’s L-Series acoustics have been the flagship of the range since their introduction more than 20 years ago. These high-end handcrafted guitars followed on from high end of Yamaha’s original FG range and directly from guitars like the FG1500 and FG2000. Through the years the L-series range have been played by artists including Brian May, Paul Simon and John Lennon, and today’s release of new electro-acoustics takes what is learnt from these international musicians requirements and applied to the design of each instrument.
Jimmy Page has been a long time Yamaha acoustic player, originally buying 2 FG180’s (an acoustic described at the time as a ‘working man’s Martin’) to record with in the early 70’s. After the release of our high-end 26 and 36 models last year Jimmy Page was one of the first to take delivery of a non-cutaway electro which incorporated the cutting edge performance of the A.R.T. (Acoustic Resonance Transducer) pickup system with ultra-traditional styling of a dreadnought instrument.
The new L-Series models are available in 3 specification levels, all featuring Yamaha’s LL modified dreadnought body style:
The 6-series acoustics feature a premium solid Engelmann spruce top, chosen for their light colour and mature tone, combined with rosewood back and sides to give stunning high-end looks and classic sound – well balanced, powerful and full of body. A 3-ply (Mahogany / Rosewood / Mahogany) ‘V’ shaped neck is used to give incredible strength, stability and improved tone to the instrument.
New for 2009 the LLX6A features Yamaha’s exclusive 3-way A.R.T pickup system. The System 57 preamp from the best-selling APX/CPX900 series powers the unit and includes 3-band EQ, independent volume controls for the 3 ART pickups and an on-board chromatic tuner. The LLX6A is available in 3 new colours: Black, Brown Sunburst and Tobacco Brown Sunburst.
The LLX16 upgrades LLX6A by adding premium solid Rosewood back & sides and adds the System 60 ART preamp as used on the Japanese L-Series models.
System 60 couples the 3-way A.R.T sensor system to an exclusive preamp which offers ultra-simple controls (3 independent pickup volumes – bass, full-range, treble - and master volume) with hi-fi grade components for the most transparent, powerful electro-acoustic system available. Using custom-designed, calibrated push-push pots, the System 60 controls are designed to offer stage-friendly ergonomics but be hidden away and not detract from the traditional looks of the L-Series when not in use. The L-Series A.R.T system faithfully reproduces the stunning tone of the L-Series guitars with complete transparency – both in terms of sound and playing experience.
LLX26 sits in the Japanese handcrafted L-Series range. Handmade by our master luthiers, each Japanese L-Series features hand-selected solid Rosewood back & sides, solid Englemann spruce top, 5-ply mahogany / paduak / mahogany / paduak / mahogany neck and Yamaha’s exclusive Square Frame Side Bracing for enhanced volume and LF response. The 26 series models also feature Yamaha’s exclusive A.R.E. treatment which is designed to make a brand new guitar sound like an old, played-in instrument. A.R.E adds a special wood treatment step to the guitar top’s seasoning process resulting in a guitar with a noticeably smoother, more coherent tone with fuller bass and richer treble – just like an instrument played for 20 or 30 years. LLX26 also features the System 60 pre-amp and 3-way A.R.T. pickup combination.
Yamaha’s FG range of acoustic guitars is the company’s longest running range of guitars – the company’s first steel string acoustics, launched in 1966, were FGs and since then countless guitarists have played their first chords on a Yamaha FG. The FG guitars have been on countless records, written thousands of songs and even performed at Woodstock at the hand of folk legend ‘Country Joe McDonald’.
The latest range of FGs features the perfect combination of modern and traditional features to create a range of acoustic guitars that appeal to a wide range of players and offer the same focus on sound and playability as the original FGs.
New for this year, the FGX730SC follows in the long line of player favourite electro-acoustics. Built with a solid Sitka spruce top and rosewood back and sides this guitar takes a cutaway-dreadnought body shape and throws in Yamaha’s legendary build quality and set up to make a guitar with a strong, full tone and incredible playability.
For the first time in the FG range the FGX730SC features Yamaha’s 1-way ART pickup system (as used on the APX/CPX700) and System 56 preamp complete with 3-band EQ with swept mids and on-board chromatic tuner.
All-new for 2009, the FJ guitars combine the specification and cosmetics of the best-selling FG range with Yamaha’s exclusive mini-jumbo body style. Joining the modified dreadnought FG and the folk-size FS, the FJ completes the line-up to offer a choice of sounds and looks.
Featuring a solid Sitka spruce top, nato back & sides, the FJX720SC combines Yamaha’s legendary build-quality and setup with the larger LJ body for a full, powerful tone with strong lows and smooth highs. For amplified performance, the FJX720SC relies on Yamaha’s tried and tested piezo pickup mated to the latest System 55T preamp featuring master volume, 3-band EQ with sweepable midrange and onboard chromatic tuner.
The new FJX730SC features a solid Sitka spruce top and rosewood back & sides and includes Yamaha’s A.R.T. (Acoustic Resonance Transducer) pickup system (as used on the APX/CPX700) and System 56 preamp complete with 3-band EQ with swept mids and on-board chromatic tuner.
