Customer Spotlight: John Burns and Purple Comedy

Published: Tue November 11, 2008  News Feed

Purple Comedy is Scotland's biggest comedy podcast with over 9000 listeners per month. They record all of their shows on an Edirol 09 bought from Dolphin. Comedian John Burns explains how the popular Edirol portable recorder helped them to move away from Toilet Humour...

“I’m wedged in a toilet cubicle with a twenty stone comedian and all I can think about was how the sound quality will turn out,” explains comedian John Burns, talking about the early days of his internet radio show, Purple Comedy. The toilet in question was backstage in a Scottish comedy club and was the only place quiet enough for John to interview performers. “In the early days all we had was a little Dictaphone to record our outside broadcasts,” he recalls, “predictably the quality was dire.”

“All that changed when we bought a little Edirol R-09 at the recommendation of a guy from Dolphin music. It’s a brilliant piece of kit, I absolutely love it, I want to have its babies.” Purple Comedy, a blend of stand up, sketches and comedy news, is now the biggest comedy podcast in Scotland and the most popular podcast of its kind in the UK, with listeners from Montreal to Beijing. “It still amazes me that the mad cap things we record on this little digital recorder, no bigger than a fag packet, are heard by thousands of folk right across the world.”

“The Edirol is so versatile, I’ve recorded comedy gigs in the back of pubs, made shows over the phone and done interviews with people like Craig Hill.” The first person John and co-conspirator, Glasgow based comedian Austin Low, interviewed with the kit was a world famous drug smuggler. “He looked at us with a bewildered expression,” John remembers, “and then he says, I smuggled hundreds of tones of hash into the USA and they locked me up for seven years! What do you make of that? “I’m talking, of course, about Howard Marks a.k.a. Mr Nice, and yes, he was nice, very nice indeed actually.”

“Before we had the Edirol we had to beg folk with recording studios for a few hours of recording time but with the R-09 we can record all over the place, that makes things very spontaneous which is good for comedy. The only problem we had with it was a duff memory card but we got that replaced in a couple of days with no hassle, Dolphin is pretty efficient.”

“Another good feature of the Edirol is that has two built in microphones so you can put it down and people forget it’s on, you get very natural interviews like that. When you thrust a microphone in people’s faces they clam up. I used to do a lot of thrusting but I’ve given it up now, people don’t like it, the Police lady explained that to me.”
