Elvis is the Top Earning Dead Celebrity

Published: Thu October 30, 2008  News Feed

Thirty years after he died aged 42, the King of Rock 'n' Roll last year pulled in 52 million dollars, dwarfing living music stars like Justin Timberlake (44 million) and Madonna (40 million), the magazine said.

Elvis topped the list for a second year running due to the 30th anniversary extravaganza in Graceland -- his home in Memphis, Tennessee -- that in visitors and merchandising generated more income than his 2006 earnings of 49 million dollars.

John Lennon (at #7) and Marvin Gaye (#13) were the only other musicians to make it into the prestigious Lucky 13 list this year. Previously, the list was dominated by dead celebrities - Kurt Cobain topped the list in 2006, and names such as George Harrison, Ray Charles, Bob Marley and Johnny Cash have also been featured in the past Lucky 13 lists.

But this year, two movie celebrities who died recently - Heath Ledger and Paul Newman - debuted in the list.

The Lucky 13 List:

  1. Elvis Presley
  2. Charles M. Schulz
  3. Heath Ledger
  4. Albert Einstein
  5. Aaron Spelling
  6. Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel)
  7. John Lennon
  8. Andy Warhol
  9. Marilyn Monroe
  10. Steve McQueen
  11. Paul Newman
  12. James Dean
  13. Marvin Gaye

It seems we need some fresh corpses if we want to see more musicians dominating the list again. Oh well...there's always next year. And there's always Amy Winehouse...
