In recent years the rate at which scientists have been studying the intellectual benefits of learning and performing music in children has increased exponentially. 

The benefits exist and are plentiful! In particular, playing the piano can be a great thing for children. Scientists have said that studying music can:

  • Improve standardized test scores as well as reading proficiency
  • Increase mathematical and scientific aptitudes
  • Increase self-esteem
  • And increase emotional health.

These benefits arise from the fact that learning music requires the brain to read and interpret musical notes, move both hands and all ten fingers independently, and causes both the left and right brain to build connectors to each other that otherwise may not have been there.

Parents who place their children into piano lessons are said to recognize the positive effects of learning music in their children's math skills.
