Yamaha mLAN Overview

Published: Mon January 17, 2005  News Feed

One Cable. One Network. Get Connected.

mLAN FireWire Music Networking is the enabling technology for creating an intelligent, managed local area music network using FireWire. mLAN not only carries multi-channel digital audio and MIDI over 1394 FireWire, it includes the connection management so you can easily manage your entire network.

THE IEEE 1394/FIREWIRE INTERFACE.....

The IEEE 1394/FireWire interface is a common fixture on computers these days, and this high-speed data transfer standard has come full-force into the digital music and audio worlds as well. Long ago, Yamaha began exploring uses for the IEEE 1394 interface for networking multi-channel digital audio, video, control and multi-port MIDI – a high speed and simple cable connections.

The resulting mLAN (Music Local Area Network) system provides exceptionally powerful networking features with clock and connection management. More than 40 audio companies have already started using and supporting mLAN, with the list growing constantly. The widespread use of mLAN by major hardware manufacturers ensures seamless system expansion, letting you choose the equipment you want--and still enjoy the speed, power, flexibility and convenience of mLAN networking.

COMPREHENSIVE CONTROL OVER YOUR VIRTUAL mLAN STUDIO

The beauty of the mLAN system is in its simplicity. All audio, MIDI, clock and control signals are handled by the bi-directional mLAN cables, eliminating the need for complicated, messy and often noise-generating cabling systems. With the mLAN Graphic Patchbay software, even hardware patchbays are now relics of the past\"letting you completely set up and control your entire mLAN system right from your computer. The mLAN Graphic Patchbay gives you comprehensive, easy-to-use tools for managing connections among various mLAN devices, using a graphic interface to connect and disconnect virtual audio and MIDI cables. This enables a seamless system, with full computer control over your mLAN network. The mLAN devices are connected to each other by a single FireWire cable, and the multi-channel audio data passing through the cable is controlled on the computer.

You simply use the mouse to drag the virtual \"cables,\" and connect them as desired to the inputs/outputs of the various mLAN devices (called \"nodes\"). The software also lets you route wordclock inputs and outputs as needed to reliably synchronize all connected devices. Naturally, you can route the signals as you like and save the connections as a file for instant recall\"which can be called up and reconfigured as needed. Create different connection schemes for each recording session or song, and switch between them instantly. Moreover, mLAN Graphic Patchbay can be used either as a stand-alone program or as a plug-in within any Open Plug-in Technology (OPT) compatible application. Elegant, simple, comprehensive\"the mLAN Graphic Patchbay puts all your studio connections together, and gives you a level of system control and convenience that is truly unprecedented.

*Mac OSX support under development.
