Norris Green Youth Centre Battle Of The Bands
The first two weeks of March saw the build up of grand final of the NGYC Battle of the Bands. This took place on the 15th March at the Picket to an audience of 150.
All three finalists : The Ora, Kyoga & Soul Free had received coaching sessions on Saturday afternoons to prepare for the final and from their performances it could be seen that they had worked extremely hard.
After some great live music from the three bands it was Soul Free who came out on top with the most points from the judges and so were announced winners of the NGYC Battle of the Bands ’07.
They were awarded the 1st prize of a Fostex Porta-studio donated by Dolphin Music and the two runners up were given a mixed bag of musical accessories.
This is a short comment given by the winners – SOUL FREE.
“Norris Green Battle of the bands 2007 was not just an excellent experience, but also a great opportunity for bands like ourselves to become exposed to the musical “gig” scene in Liverpool as a whole.
The coaching sessions were led by professionals who knew what they were talking about. All the tips/tricks taught us a lesson not just as a group, but also to develop individual skills which collectively added to the groups advancement musically.
The fact that it was for young people, encouraged other young people to get involved in music, which gives them focus and keeps them occupied and safe.
We definitely intend to carry on visiting the Norris green youth centre in the future.
Great opportunity and we gained a lot from the coaching especially.”

The heats & the final attracted over 400 young people with 10 bands performing their material. (See NGYC’s website) This has raised the profile of the youth centre’s music resources, evidenced through the increase in young bands wanting to take advantage of the facilities at NGYC.
