Gibson’s Les Paul HD.6X-PRO Digital Guitar and Digital Snake Wow the Crowds at AES

At the recent annual Audio Engineering Society (AES) Convention, held San Francisco’s Moscone Convention Center, crowds stood at the Gibson booth to hear live demos of the Les Paul HD.6X-PRO Digital Guitar.

This Les Paul is the first guitar of the 21st Century. In addition to such traditional features as a solid mahogany body, maple top, and humbucking pickups, the HD.6X-PRO offers a revolutionary Hex pickup that generates six individual signals, onboard digital conversion, and studio-grade internal preamps. After digitizing the output from the humbuckers, the HD.6X-PRO sends the signals to a BoB breakout box that converts digital signals to individual analog channels with standard ¼” output jacks.

These separate signals allow the player to process each string individually—using different delay times or distortion settings, for example—and also pan the strings creatively in a 5.1 surround-sound field.

Because the Hex pickup and individual outs allow guitarists and engineers a way to assign each string its own track in a multitrack recorder, the HD.6X-PRO opens up an untapped world of sonic possibilities in the studio. The guitar can now be mixed, processed, and creatively edited in startling new ways.

In the demos, which occurred every half hour, AES attendees witnessed some of the HD.6X-PRO’s creative power, both in surround-sound live performances and via Cakewalk’s Sonar multitrack recording software.

Gibson also displayed its Digital Snake at this year’s AES. It was well received by show attendees, who gave thumbs up to the Digital Snake’s pioneering technology and its compelling price point. At the TEC Awards VIP reception, Gibson’s Wurlitzer digital jukebox turned heads, and many guitarists in the crowd stopped to play the Les Pauls that were on display.
